Trying to remember
When your eyes are tired
the world is tired also.
When your vision has gone
no part of the world can find you.
Time to go into the dark
where the night has eyes
to recognize its own.
There you can be sure
you are not beyond love.
The dark will be your womb
tonight.
The night will give you a horizon
further than you can see.
You must learn one thing.
The world was made to be free in.
Give up on all other worlds
except the one to which you belong.
Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet
confinement of your aloneness
to learn
anything or anyone
that does not bring you alive
is too small for you.
~ David Whyte, The House of Belonging
Words sent to me when I needed them, which I turn to again tonight as I try to find my way past the reflection to see what is really going on inside me. I need to be kinder to the woman I see there; I need to let her come out of her cage and join the world again… perhaps she is more ready than I think she is.

Beautiful words sent to you. We are in need of a catch up Suze. Lunch in Rouge on Thur?

oh, suse, YES. if you think so, then try it. if you are feeling a cage, then there is most likely one there. and please do be kind to the woman you see in the mirror – she is one of the dearest spirits on the planet i know.
(hugs to you)

Susannah,
Seeing your picture with these words moved me so…I cannot even really say. I think this poem belongs to you. Make it a good home by taking care of that girl in the glass. If any other words come to me and ask for you, I’ll be sure to get them where they need to be.
Love,
–D.–

How strange to find the words of this poem on your page. I have been living them without knowledge of late. Very few things inspire me these days and perhaps that is becuase I have moved beyond many of the things that occupy people’s lives. I visit your page often because I do find inspiration in your life and words. You are a beautiful soul and in your reflection I can see that soul seeking. There is something in your eyes, which for lack of better words I would describe as the force of your soul pushing outward, seeking, and no longer hiding in the darkness of solitude. Thank you, as always, for sharing.

There are so many things from David Whyte that speak to me. I agree that this poem suits you to a T.
Beautiful pic, Susannah; but then, how could you miss? :D

you are one of the kindest most giving people i have not met and your soul is as beautiful and you are and you should give yourself all the kindness that you give all of us out here across the miles …

What a beautiful photo of you. You are lovely. And that’s a wonderful poem, especially the ending.

I am sitting here, in tears, because this is exactly what I needed to read tonight. If you could peek inside my journal, and read my words from this evening, you would see such paralells.
I am grateful for your post tonight, and for you and your journey, always.

Dear S, You chose a wonderful poem and you spoke the words so eloquently, perhaps you do need to be kinder (more open, more forgiving, more patient) to the woman you see in the mirror each day. She is lovely, hurt, healing, creative, sweet, angry, tired, enthusiastic, giving, fun, beautiful, sad, hopeful, desolate, laughing, crying, and above all, she is absolutely 100% human … with all of the rights and responsibilities that entails. much peace and love to you … your friend, JP

Beautiful picture Susannah (and thanks for the better glimpse of the woolly gloriousness of the jacket – you aren’t looking too bad yourself ;-))
Reading through this poem, I was quite sure it had come from your inky fingers, so perfect it was for you. Our Delia has such a gift for the matching the right words and moments, doesn’t she?
Those closing lines blow me away. So apt for me too, as do you know both you Delia belong to that group of people who help me bring me alive?
love to you x x x x x

Wonderful photo – you certainly LOOK ready to open new doors! The poem is beautiful, mirroring Delia’s thoughtful heart.

I love David Whyte’s poems, they resonate so deeply with me. Funny that I ‘found’ his work on the shelves in my office. My office mate has loved his work for years.

…and she is so beautiful she takes my breath away…
most people are afriad of the darkness and the aloneness. those who are brave enough, wise enough, to go into them are rare and beautiful creatures…and you my friend are one of them…
i love you…

Beautiful words. Going into a dark place can help. Go all the way. It’ll help.
Take care! X

Susannah,
I feel there is much wisdom in this poem for you. You friend is in touch with your being and recognizes what salves your soul.
Your photo is beautiful. You are alluring, enchanting. Your soul, shimmering in the pools of your eyes, is mesmerizing.
