Sunday Scribblings: Crush
I haven’t done one in a while but there was no way I could let this week’s Sunday Scribblings prompt go ignored. As a teenage girl I was queen of the film star crush, and with every birthday I reached the ages of my crushes increased dramatically; I was the fifteen-year-old crushing on the craggy-faced grey-haired actors – all father figures to be sure.
I went to an all-girls grammar school, and with no brothers or male cousins my access to real boys was limited, so it was my rich imagination that fuelled my fantasies. I’ve had three major relationships in my life, and in the first two I developed crushes on people I knew, signs of my dissatisfaction within the relationships rather than harmless daydreams. However, in my last relationship I had no crushes at all – my love was my crush, he was my matinee idol. This is part of the reason why I avoid looking at photographs of him – I don’t want him to be reduced to an icon on a piece of paper that is inaccessible to me. And so instead I find myself appreciating the intoxicating masculinity of the actors I see on the television or cinema screen; living breathing hot flesh, chiselled jaws, hairy chests, shapely strong arms. I think it would be safe to assume that my libido is returning.
While putting together the montage for this post, my friend Anna called me. When I told her the names of the actors I was including she laughed and pointed out that I have such a definite type. And it’s true, I do – the unifying feature of these four men is their absolute MANLINESS. I’m a tall undeniably feminine woman so I guess it makes sense that nature would make me in such a way that I’d be attracted to my male equivalent. No fey skinny boys for me thanks.
To admit to a crush doesn’t seem very grown-up, but I regard it as one facet of a well-rounded sexuality. I have many crushes on women too and piecing together the second montage I was struck by how similar they all are – and how they are all the very opposite of how I look. Yet I perceive qualities in them I (have been told) I have: a slightly imperious manner, intelligence, sensuality, a definite womanliness. Do we have crushes on the men we want to fuck (I’m sure Pierce is a great conversationalist, but that’s not what I’m interested in), but fancy the women we want to be (looks-wise) and who we can see glimpses of ourselves in? Is Saffron Burrows an idealised version of me, or do I simply want to get inside her knickers?
My libido is definitely returning.

i thought was up on my celebrity knowledge, but i don’t recognize any of your girl crushes! jake gyllenhaal is the one who makes me swoon…
Susannah,
YES!!! I’m so glad you decided not o pass up this week’s Sunday Scribblings. Your male choices are in fact quite manly, not my type at all, however. I’m a Burt Reynolds (with hairpiece), Paul Hogan, Sean Connery, and Liam Neeson kinda guy. Your female crushes are admittedly sensual, womanly, women worthy of attention. Penélope Cruz,Lorraine Bracco,Sophie Marceau, and
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio are more crush worthy for me.
I do agree with you wholeheartedly though….It’s about fucking.
U.rel
ooh, yes, i quite fancy Sophie Marceau too.. and Liam Neeson….
For Ruby (and anyone else who is puzzled) the girls are (clockwise from top left): Monica Belluci, Charlotte Rampling, Karina Lombard and Saffron Burrows
Boys are Pierce Brosnan, Josh Holloway, Hugh Jackman and Patrick Dempsey
Maybe the women crushes are a little bit of both -we admire what we see in them and perhaps feel that if we were intimate and sexual with them, their qualities might rub off on us?
Amen!
I like this idea of what a crush on a woman does for us as opposed to the men. Patrick Dempsey and Hugh Jackman are yummy, but I would never leave Ewan McGregor off my crush list.
What a great post, my love! Yes. You and I have the SAME taste in men…and women! All my girl-crushes look like these chicks here. And I am also tall, and love me a MAN man. Kory always makes fun that I like “big, smelly men”. LOL. Yep. (like him.);) I have never dated or had sex with a guy under 6’2, I don’t think. (okay, that maks me sound like a slut if I just “don’t think”! LOL! Ahem…)
:)
Hee! This post made me smile tonight. :) As a teenager, I had crushes on older, greying men, too. Richard Chamberlain was my first matinee idol crush – yep, I had no clue back then. Actually, I think it was his priest character in the Thorn Birds than had me swooning. I don’t recognize the woman crush on the bottom right but the other women crushes are certainly sensual, intelligent women. I would also add Juliette Binoche to the Women Crush list.
YEP! I like your taste in men sweetie! Luscious ;) XXOO
My crushes tend to look similar too…angular faces, dark hair….
you like the pointed chin it seems and high cheekbones. :) lovely montages, esp the second one. ahem…
p.s. this could So be turned into an awesome meme!!!
Good male choices. My newest one is Matthew McConghey or however you spell it. My husband is aware that I like him. He even suggested we go see “Sahara with that guy you like….” I prefer him as a blonde although I normally go for the dark haired ones. Isn’t it great that your libido is returning?

*Is Saffron Burrows an idealised version of me, or do I simply want to get inside her knickers?*
Oh I spluttered out loud at that ~ LOL.
And I HEART Monica too :-)
My crushes have no rhyme of reason. just men and women that seem to have passed my way on this journey. All various cute moments of madness …
And you definitely have quality taste my dear!
Oops, I think I posted in the wrong spot.
Anyway, I loved your take on the prompt, and I quoted you in my post–hope that’s okay.
Hope to catch up on your most recent posts later today, my dear.
xoxo
Very interesting peek at your sweet-crushing-honey heart. Loved it…I am almost intimidated by your tall, manly men, yet this is the sort I ended up married to. I always crushed HARD on the emaciated poet boys with lush flowing hair and their hearts on their sleeves…(sigh). Actually, it’s a very good thing not to have ended up with one of those, now that I think of it!
Love to you,
D.
I loved this because all my first crushes were on movie and TV stars- in fact, right now I have a wicked one for Angelina Jolie… it’s amazing the difference we can have as far as opposite sex and same sex crushes goes, but probably what unites them all is their un-attainableness (I don’t even know if that’s a real word!) amd that is why we fall so hard for them…
I like nothing more than reading about a woman’s libido returning!
YUMMY. lol….i agree with ALL of your choices (we share the saffron burrows crush) and i think i watched all of the x-men movies just to see hugh jackman’s steel claws come out of his hands…droooooool.
i miss you, sweet. an email is coming to get you hopefully this week.
(isn’t it FUN when the libido comes back? just wait until spring…i always go mad as a hatter for boys and girls then.)
(a big hug here – hopefully, soon, we can do it in person.)
This was fascinating, Susannah! I never really thought very much before about what my crushes have in common, but now that you’ve got me thinking about it, my man crushes are very much of a type and very much the same as YOUR type. I’d totally go for any of the men in your photos and my ultimate “of all time” man crush is Cary Grant, who would fit right in with that crew too.
My women crushes though, y’know they aren’t nearly as much like each other as the men are. The main physical thing I think they have in common are that none of them look anything at all like me. They’re all what I would perceive as more exotic looking than I am. But personality (or at least as much as we can get of personality for a celebrity where so much of what we see is merely a public persona), yes…there I can see similarities to myself in the women I crush on. Interesting…
What a fun post! Like Delia, I always crushed on the skinny poet boys too, but ended up with a geek who is “arrogant and cynical” which is also fun.
Selma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, and Ashwaryia Rai are my current girl crushes…I guess I like them exotic and dramatic…kind of like me!
I’m so glad your libido is returning.
pssssst….
I had two major major maaajor crushes!..( shhhhhh..)..
One was this guy..who sat beside me in my senior year in high school..He was the school physics….geometry..chemistry geek.. complete with the thick eyeglasses….
We became friends..
then one day..um’ he!he!..when we were left alone together..he took off his glasses…looked into my eyes and gave me this thriiiill of a kiss….oh’ yeees!!!…..
21 years after..( geek now in NYC..not looking the least bit geeky anymore!!)..he gives me a surprise call..to say..he wonders about me..and just wants to say that…. he still remembers that kiss!..(evil giggle here!!)
The other crush?..oh’..sleeping beside me..he!he!
( ahhhh..your post made me feel soooo…17!)
Such droolable men! I couldn’t agree more. I love the very masculine males.
Delicious post!
i had to take a cold shower after looking at both of your photo montages. ; )
this is one of my favorite posts of yours.
“Is Saffron Burrows an idealised version of me, or do I simply want to get inside her knickers?”
definitely inside her knickers!! LOL.
you’re beautiful baby. xoxo

XO Sophie
Yummy!
All of it.
Yummy!
All of it.
I find that I’m attracted to men who look like my first love.
Hi Susannah,
Have you ever thought of publishing your collages? Don’t know if you’re familiar with Sabrina Ward Harrison, but your work reminds me of hers… lovely! http://sabrinawardharrison.com/
Margaret, thank you so much for your compliment – and god, i’d love to publish something along of the work SWH does, but i know my limitations :-) x
Wonderful post to the SS prompt.
You brought back memories. Oh, Pierce, as I hold my pillow; That guy is SUCH A HUNK!!!!
Not into the women, but as an artist, those photos are strikingly sensual of all of them. What an aura they exude. I agree both the men and the women you chose are strongly radiating potent vibes.
